It's been years since I've read a Nora Roberts book and was happy that this was just as good as I remembered her books being. I loved the setting - a South Dakota big cat wildlife refuge. I liked the love story - childhood sweethearts that fell out of touch. I didn't care for the Farley romance - seemed forced and cliched. And the ending was very quick to wrap up.

Loved it

It’s so awesome when an author can describe a place so well you believe you are there. I’ve been to the Black Hills numerous times, it was all written perfection in this book. Made me wish I was back there. I’m normally not a fan of 2nd chance type books, but this is Nora Roberts we are talking about, so I was like what the heck. And I’m so glad I did. Lil and Coop’s story was just magnificent.

While it's better for the fictional taxpayers that the villain got ninjaed by the cougar, I find it an anticlimactic ending for him. Honestly, I would have loved to have him find out that he has no Sioux blood. Yes, it was just an excuse to justify his serial killer lifestyle, but watching his worldview be shattered to find he's a descendant of the people he disdained before he got killed off would have been nice.

3.5* I enjoyed the story and loved the setting, there was just some issues with pacing that prevented this from being a really great read for me.

NR writes stories that while they may strain the credibility (the last scene with Baby), they still remain engrossing. I enjoyed Black Hills the first time around - the whole refuge theme which i found really likable (though I do think she made it as close to the real thing possible). The relationship between the different characters is another strength of the book. It sort of made this book feel good. One of her good standalone books in the recent times after High Noon.
