'The Weirn Books, Vol. 1' with story and art by Svetlana Chmakova is a graphic novel about young magic users who live in the Night Realm.

Weirns are like vampires, but not. They attract interesting shadow pets. Allis and Na'ya are young weirns who still go to school. When a bully in the school starts to act unusually nice, and Na'ya's little brother disappears, they are suspicious. The investigation leads them to a forbidden mansion in the Silent Woods and a secret that has lasted for years.

I liked this story of unusual creatures and magic. The worldbuilding is interesting. The art has a manga style that was appealing.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Yen Press and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

This series is clearly meant for younger readers than the Nightschool series was. It's almost a lovely blending of her Berrybrook series and Nightschool.
As an adult, I enjoyed the Nightschool series more, but I still enjoyed the beginning of this series as well and am very glad younger readers can enjoy Svetlana's work as much as I do.

Adorable and scary (a perfectly acceptable level of scary for ages 9 and up, or even younger, depending on the kid)! Can't wait to see what happens in the next book!

Thanks to NetGalley for a free review copy of this book!

I wasn't sure if I was going to like this one but it was so good!! I loved all the magical aspects of it as well as the spooky story of the Headmistress. The two main characters, Ailis (Leesh) and Na'Ya and so cute together and I love their friendship throughout the book. I also really loved the town that they live in - it gave me really strong Halloween Town vibes from back in the day on Disney Channel. I would highly, highly recommend this to anyone but especially kids that are interested in books that have magic in them. I absolutely LOVED this book!!
