I thoroughly enjoyed this fictional retelling of the little-known kindertransports from Europe to London on the eve of WWII. Clayton has done exceptional research for this novel, but it never feels heavy handed. The characters shine, and it has the feel of a slow burn thriller, made all the more alarming because, of course, these horrors are real.

I can't shut my brain from imaging a day in Austria where I write plays and explore through an unauthorized underground with a mathematician than will later be my lover then the war separates us. I read The Last Train to London, I realised A LOT. One is that a mustached man divided families, marriage and friendship. But somehow, the war also made humankind understand how ideals do not matter anymore, but to simply survive. To simply see the glimpse of your beloved. Two, the story of Truus is a forgotten act of heroism. I have to admit, I don't know who is Wijsmiller before I read this book. Last but not the least, Stephan and Zofie threw a massive bomb in my head saying "YOU LACK AFFECTION, YOU OLD FOOL!!!" in the end, like every other historical fiction book. It leaves me wanting more.

A truly fantastic book. One of the best books I've had the pleasure of reading and very incredibly well written, it was truly heart wrenching.

I tried the audiobook and just could not follow along to the narrator. Might try a different version of this book

Dit boek kon mijn aandacht niet vasthouden! Het sprong van de hak op de tak en ik kon geen 'lijntje' tussen de personages vinden. Daardoor vond ik het moeilijk te volgen.
