This 17th book in the Hamish Macbeth series doesn't disappoint. Television reporter Crystal French races into a small, remote village in Scotland and is stopped and cited for reckless driving by Constable Hamish Macbeth. She is in the area to do research for a proposed new television series, "Behind the Lace Curtains" which promises to uncover and expose secrets that residents of the village would prefer to remain hidden. Panic ensures culminating in a suicide and then, not surprisingly, Crystal French is found murdered in her BMW. What's going on? Was it one of the villagers or did one of the television people take advantage of the situation. A perfect little cozy to tuck into the bag or suitcase and take along to the pool or on vacation.

First book I read in the series. I enjoyed the village setting and the characters. I would of liked more of an exciting twist on the murders but I suppose it's a cosy read. I enjoyed it.

Review - I have noticed that Beaton is better writing about country life than anything involving the press or media. Hence, this one was a let-down for me. Nevertheless, it was still cleverly done - no matter the topic that always seems to be the case. I think my favourite characters in this novel were Elspeth and Inspector Carson. They interacted really well with Hamish and both added a little something extra to the story, which has been missing in previous ones.

Genre? - Crime / Mystery

Characters? - Hamish Macbeth / Elspeth Grant / Jimmy Anderson / Detective Inspector Carson / Angela Brodie / Mrs McClellan / Mrs Wellington

Setting? - Lochdubh (Scotland)

Series? - Hamish Macbeth #18

Recommend? - Yes

Rating - 14/20

This is my third by this author and the second from the Macbeth series. They are good quick, light, entertaing reads, however they don't seem to engage me quite as much as some other authors who can tell a good mystery, and I can't quite put my finger on why. I wouldn't say that I won't read any more if they come my way, but I wouldn't be drawn into hunting them out.
