Such a good read! Aside from a tiny bit of dating technology wise, it's still relevant today: https://blogendorff.ghost.io/book-review-contact/

I listened to the audio version and found myself zoning out during some of more theological and philosophical parts, but overall, I really enjoyed this book. Especially the second half.

I read this alongside Sagan's Cosmos. It is interesting that the same themes show up in both his non-fiction and in this foray into fiction: wonder of the universe, belief in the possibility of extra terrestrial life, fear of mutual assured destruction, and desire for the world powers to work together.

Unfortunately, fiction is not Sagan's strong suit. While he mentions his love for science fiction many times in Cosmos, his novel doesn't compare. Sagan talks over the heads of his audience. Rather than a narrative full of suspense, Contact is a series of detailed cosmological lectures strung together. There are some good moments (such as Ellie's discussion with the religious figure), but this definitely is not a "great" novel. Go read Cosmos!
