this series has been labelled a fascinating look at the complex nature of female friendship which i would agree with. there's so much truth in the way the women relate to each other. this particular volume was pretty depressing but still a fascinating story.

This series is The Godfather for women. In fact, Mario Puzo wishes he could write something this hard.

The story of Elena and Lila's friendship continues into their young adult years. Lila, married at 16, finds herself unhappy in her marriage. Elena continues her education, her fascination with Nino, and her inability to extricate her own ambitions and self-worth from Lila.

I don't really like the characters of these novels - Lila is a horrible, selfish, manipulative human being - but there is something about these books that holds my interest.

This is only the briefest of summaries and reviews. There is so much more that could be said about this book. It would be perfect for a book club discussion...if you have a book club that doesn't shy away from reading books with profanity and violence.
