The greatest tragedy of this book is that you read it in elementary school, and so think “Wow, poetry can be excellent! This is great!” Then following that, you will never be introduced again to another stimulating piece of poetry until college or later if you’re looking for it on your own. This is the sort of book that kids really need to see- the light, fun side of literature that will hook them into reading. Sure there are lessons to be learned, but sometimes reading can just be enjoyable. If you start drowning kids in symbolism at five years old they’ll never want to read again.
I really encourage relatives to gift this book to children, and read it to your kids!

My beard grows to my toes
I never wears no clothes
I wraps my hair
Around my bare,
And down the road I goes.

They are really boring and uncreative poems. I could barely keep my eyes open reading them. The like flare or cadence.

I grew up with this book! My mother would read me Shel Silverstein poems as I was staring up at the glow-in-the-dark stars on my bedroom ceiling. It's a charming, heartwarming book of poems that you'll hold with you for a lifetime.
