This wasn’t my favourite Amanda Quick novel, but it’s a very solid one. I was struggling to find a new romance to read and picked this because I find her very reliable in terms of being able to get into it pretty easily, and it didn’t let me down. It had all the things I want in a book by her – a determined but occasionally reckless FMC, a capable, occasionally stern but slightly roguish MMC, an element of hidden identity, a solid murder mystery, a bit of danger, a sense of humour, and a good romance.
Really, there’s not much else for me to say about it; whilst the mystery plot was different and kept me guessing with lots of twists and turns, the romantic story was very reminiscent of a lot of her books, and in that sense was quite predictable. But that’s what I wanted, and I was thoroughly satisfied by how it played out by the end. It was a solid romance with a side of mystery and it kept me entertained throughout.

Amanda Quick is my go-to when I travel now. Her books are fun, quick and always have the best heroines. This one is more of the same but she does it so well, I do not complain!

I misread the review for this book and assumed it was a mystery with a love story tied in. Instead, I got a Victorian romance novel with a mystery plot. It followed the general romance formula: a couple of steamy petticoat-and-corset scenes, with a few cute murder-in-Polite-Society twists. Not bad for cotton candy for the brain, and certainly a light enough read to start off summer.

I really enjoyed this - a Victorian mystery romance. Just wish we’d had a little more spice and a little more insight into them both actually falling in love, because it was packed with plot so sometimes missed a bit of introspection from the characters.
