Great cosy mystery! Loved the setting, characters especially the protagonist and how the mystery unfolded. I will be continuing with the series!

Absolutely devoured Limelight by Penny Green. I loved how she was incredibly unique for her time, not only by being a spinster but being a pioneer in women's journalism. I love the Victorian era and thought it was interesting how the fashion was incorporated as a serious matter. I thought there was a healthy dose of suspects, and the ending while somewhat surprising was not completely out of left field. It made sense with the clues given. I'd definitely recommend this who anyone who loves mystery and historical fiction. Started Rookery as soon as I finished Limelight because I couldn't get enough!
For my complete review check out A new book review is up! This one is of Emily Organ's Limelight, the first in the Penny Green Series.
Penny Green was an unusual woman in 1883. Not only is she a spinster, but she's a female journalist. When her good friend and actress Lizzie Dixie is found murdered in a graveyard, Penny is asked by Scotland Yard's Inspector Blakely to help him with the case. The thing is, Lizzie Dixie was presumed dead five years earlier on the sinking of a ship.

It drags a bit. There is plenty of investigation, but little real mystery. Disappointing.

I'm chasing after what seems to be an illusive mix of dark Victorian and detective story, which I have found in a couple of novels and Ripper Street but sadly not here. Another reviewer said that the writer describes what happens and doesn't show you and I think this is a good description of the book. The heroine wears glasses but you only realise this when she takes them off half way through the novel. She does an awful lot of staggering backwards and holding herself onto things, sometimes so much so that you're laughing.
I have to say I much more enjoyed the notes that the author made at the end of the book, which showed her real in-depth knowledge about the era and the places she was writing about.
And the most annoying thing? It's a bloody series, so now I'm reading the next one because I can't not...... *grrr*

I had a hard time getting through this one. Just didn’t really build any care for what happened to the characters.
