While the story of Chris McCandless journey into the wild is interesting, I don’t think there is enough info for a full length book and I didn’t find the “character” of McCandless to be very compelling. While I don’t have the disdain that some readers have for him, he just comes across as mildly arrogant and hard-headed, refusing aid from many other people he met along the way that may have just saved his life. Despite all of the testimony from the people he met claiming how impactful of a person he was on their life, it was hard to grasp while reading and most of the claims felt very surface level.

That being said, the book is well researched and Krakauer did a great job of documenting the story through these interviews, given the lack of other hard evidence. However, I didn’t find the parallels to other adventurers or Krakauer’s own travels to be very interesting or meaningful. It’s a decent, relatively short, book that is interesting if you’re not familiar with the story, but not exactly mind-blowing, in my opinion.

This book was really well written. I so enjoyed Jon’s ability to tie in and connect multiple stories and relational value in outdoors experiences with various people. Being able to understand the meaning behind peoples choice to be engaged in the outdoors gave me an unexpected definition for these characters. I truly enjoyed it and look forward to unpacking it with others.

Wow, fascinating book. Krakauer really tried to figure out why a kid would give up everything and go into the Alaskian frontier, and we are still unsure. A great snapshot into extremism.
