Not mad I read it, but probably wouldn’t recommend. Maybe I missed it, but what was up with the tension and fight between Naomi and Mahalia? Mahalia’s song lists were distracting.

This book was very mid. And I can't tell if it was just too YA for me or if it was actually just very mid. I have to be honest, I couldn't stand the main character. The way she put herself as the victim in EVERY situation was frustrating and eye roll-inducing. She doesn't treat the people around her well and is then surprised to receive backlash. The pacing also felt strange in places, some parts that I thought could be interesting were skipped over quickly while others were drawn out that were boring and didn't really advance the plot in any way significant. I was a little disappointed because I wanted to like this book a lot. I think it is a fun idea and I really wanted to see the MC come out (ha!) on top. But the whole thing fell a little flat to me apart from some key moments that I did think showed importance and significance and were trying to tell something meaningful. Unfortunately for me they got lost in the book.

CW: Racial slurs, racism, biphobia, homophobia, mentions of Christianity and religious bigotry, classism, absent/estranged parent; a scene references HP and mentions JKR's transphobia and why the character doesn't support the author

A sapphic teen rom-com about a messy Black bisexual girl who loves old music. Mahalia Harris is trying to make it through junior year of high school while trying to plan the ultimate "Coming Out" party with rainbows galore and a fancy rainbow dress. But, she has to save up the funds for it with her job at the grocery store. I LOVED THIS. Camryn Garrett is SO underrated. I devour all of her books. The audiobook was fantastic with it's narration, distinct for every character. What I love most about Garrett's work is that she adds commentary on important topics into her novels. They are so important for teens, especially queer Black teens. I loved Siobhan and Mahalia's chemistry and how their romance bloomed. There's also a sex positive scene which is SO crucial for queer teens to read and feel represented.

If you're a fan of the classics (i.e. Fleetwood Mac and The Cure), books with playlists, messy queer characters and a book that feels like you're watching a teen rom-com, Friday I'm in Love is *just* that.

A fun read. Mahalia has a lot of personality. The chaacters so diverse each character looks nothing like each other.
There is a few boring bits that I wanted to skip but there's a bit of tension towards the end.
This book is worth reading.

this was just kinda average. i thought the whole idea of the “coming out” party was pretty cool, but i thought it would have more of a role in the book than it ended up having. i also just didn’t feel the chemistry between mahalia and siobhan. ALSO mahalia’s mom made me want to throw hands a bit, but that also may just be my religious trauma speaking 🙃

⚠️: homophobia, biphobia, racism, outing, religious bigotry, minor ff sexual content, racial slurs (the reading aloud of the n-word in class by a white person), mentions of slavery, alcohol
