this was just kinda average. i thought the whole idea of the “coming out” party was pretty cool, but i thought it would have more of a role in the book than it ended up having. i also just didn’t feel the chemistry between mahalia and siobhan. ALSO mahalia’s mom made me want to throw hands a bit, but that also may just be my religious trauma speaking 🙃

⚠️: homophobia, biphobia, racism, outing, religious bigotry, minor ff sexual content, racial slurs (the reading aloud of the n-word in class by a white person), mentions of slavery, alcohol

At first I was convinced the author was closer to my age (late 40s) than the main character’s age (16) because so many of the musical references were Gen X touchstones—The Cure, The Police, Whitney Houston, Depeche Mode, to name just a few. But nope, the author is only around 22, she just has old people taste in music. Nevertheless, the book made me legit cry happy/emotional tears by the end, so it has earned its full five stars.

Thanks to PRH for the free advance copy of this book.

 - Hello, I need to do some queer screaming about FRIDAY I'M IN LOVE! I loved absolutely everything about this book. Mahalia is a fantastic protagonist: energetic, optimistic, sure of herself, but also a bit selfish at times.
- This book is so full of love and joy and discovery. It does touch on some difficult topics - tight finances, racism in the school curriculum, and more - but the exuberance never dies.
- This book is everything great about YA. Messy feelings, discovery of yourself and your relationships, learning how to maneuver through the world, and taking pride in who you are.
