Slower to start than A Darker Shade of Magic - others have mentioned second book syndrome, and yeah, in all honesty, it has more than a touch of that - but once the action finally began, I very much enjoyed it. Perhaps with the exception of the… shall we say “more-than-slight overpowering” of Lila? I guessed where her story was headed back in book one, the first time her unique facial feature was mentioned, but even with that in mind she feels a bit TOO special. Which is a shame, because I personally have a soft spot for female characters wielding blades.

The first three quarters of the book were such a draaaaag! I trudged through it and it was so incredibly boring. It picked up in the last quarter but I had to bear 300 pages of boredom and everyone overthinking to get to that point. Not sure if I'll pick the next book yet!

More running hands through the hair, lots of adjectives to describe grins. But overall still a fun, entertaining read.

I absolutely love this series! It just keeps getting better! The characters are all so fun, and flawed and secretive. Lila has definitely grown on me with this one. Not that I didn't like her in the first one, but I found her to be slightly annoying. Also I absolutely love Alucard, the sass is fantastic! I can't wait to see where the last book goes, and I'm kicking myself for waiting so long to pick up this series.

re-read in 2021:
I still adore this book, and I think it's my favourite of the trilogy. The Essen Tasch, Lila's growing magical powers, the political landscape, the dynamics of Kell's life, Holland, generally. *chef kiss*

Original thoughts, read in 2016:

Oh. My. God.

This book. I've only just finished it and I'm reeling. I don't know what to do with myself. There was all the build up and I saw the ending coming, obviously, but dear lord that was intense. This novel had everything and I adored every single second of it. Now all I need is the next book.

She’s still my favorite author, books like these are why.

3.5 stars, actually. But I rounded up because I’m partial to this overall concept, and to Kell ❤️.

Book one was all around better, though. Or maybe I was just in the honeymoon phase with it? This one was a little slow in the beginning, and the middle was mostly filler (though it had its moments). I flew through the last 100 pages, however, and now I’m ready to dive straight into the last book.
