Sure, the story could’ve been richer but the brevity and atmosphere of this read trump that in my opinion. Absolutely gorgeous book. I really related to a lot of it in a weird way too, it really got me.

The artwork is the highlight. I like slower stories with less plot, but here it felt a bit incomplete. This is the story of a teenager experimenting with drugs, but it doesn't really carry the weight one might expect from that story. Not that it has to be extremely heavy, but here the foray into that world feels so brief and ultimately inconsequential that some may be left wondering what the point of building a novel around it was. The book also leaves something to be desired when it comes to understanding characters' motivations and emotions. The best graphic novels (and novels in general) do this successfully, I think. But the artwork is very good and atmospheric. I enjoyed the story, but it was very leisurely paced without being as meditative as I would have liked.

This book was great. It was drawn beautifully and the story was rather interesting. It was just a really good read and I have no clue how to explain it, it was just a great short story, that did what it wanted to and then left.
Moderate: Addiction, Colonisation, Sexual harassment, Toxic friendship, Sexism, Cursing, Drug abuse, Drug use, Homophobia, and Sexual content

Night Fisher's somewhat self-indulgent storyline is carried admirably by Johnson's drawings. His craft creates a book that is both subtle and resonant - it's a story that I've thought back to many times but can never quite seem to retell.
