Generally a good book but the ending didn't quite live up to expectations

Well, I found this book a hot mess. The storyline was all over the place, jumping back and forth from the past to the present and from character to character. This left me confused and having to go back to past chapters to remember what she was talking about. I also lacked any connection with the characters which made the book hard to get through.

I had high hopes for this author but I will still read some of her other books to see if maybe this just wasn’t the book for me.

I'll start by saying that I'm a big fan of Paula Hawkins. I read The Girl on the Train right when it came out and loved it. I read Into the Water, which a good chunk of her fans didn't like, and was decently pleased by it. I came into this novel with big expectations, but unfortunately, this novel did not deliver for me.

To begin, there are a multitude of perspectives in this story, to the point where it gets a bit tiring to keep track of everyone. The novel bounces back and forth between these perspectives, as well as sharing experts from a novel, which didn't serve much of a purpose, in my opinion.

The characters weren't as well-developed as I would have liked. I also didn't feel like the characters all tied in well with each other. While some had an interesting back story, not all of it tied back into the plot or other characters, making me wonder what the purpose of including a lot of this information was.

Parts of the novel seemed to drag on, but I pushed through as I read other reviews saying that while the beginning was slow, the excellent ending would make up for it. As I finally got to the end, I did not receive the big twist of an ending. I had predicted the majority of the end, and the parts I hadn't predicted didn't come as a great shock to me.

Overall, I wasn't super impressed with this book!

Just like the title this book is a slow burn. However, the way the pieces fall into place of the mysterious murder of Daniel is very satisfying. The integration of a book inside a book was an interesting detail as well. Overall a good read, the connections among the characters makes it interesting.

This one hit me in places I could not have imagined it would and I didn't expect to care about the characters as much as I did. I'm impressed.
