This was an assigned text and not something I would normally pick up, but it was interesting storyline. The style was unique and flowed well together, but that was probably one of the few things I enjoyed about this book.

However, I commend the author for sharing it with us!

Sometimes a family is so unable to reckon with their ability to sew dysfunction so deeply into the fabric of another person that the mere hint of it makes them break down. And you look at them, tearing themselves apart, and you can’t help but say “But hey, we had good times too?” even if you can’t always remember them.

A rocky, tender coming-of-age story about a young man grappling with his race, social class, and sexuality that reminds us, with visceral detail, that growing up can hurt.

read this one for two classes and couldn’t shut up about it either time. writing is fantastic and has some very too real observations about growing up in poverty
