It was good but not exceptional.
I have to admit that the part of the dog dying at the end got me.

2 stars is generous. I could not stand the protagonist, Tomas, which made the entire book hard to like and enjoy.
Also, can you please come up with another way to say “another woman’s groin?” Gross.

Not an enjoyable book, but certainly one that has a lot to say. I want to read an analysis of it, because I feel like I have no idea what it was truly about. Very thought provoking though, in many ways...

I don’t t even know how to begin describing this book. I would dare to say it’s even more traumatising than Saltburn. None of the characters are lovable, every single one makes hurtful and selfish decisions, dragging eachother lower in life than them. Even after studying this book in school I cannot figure out what its point is. To me, it was a waste of my time. I barely made it through and I disagree with the level of praise it has received.

absolute garbage book. the word "unbearable" accurately describes this book. sexist narrator. sexist characters. you could feel the hatred towards women in the way that they were portrayed. especially compared to male characters, which were depicted in neutral tone of voice. disgusting scenes. LOTS of gaslighting, mental and sexual abuse, lack of consent etc.

This novel by Milan Kundera is about the lives of two women, two men and a dog. It takes place in the late 1960's and early 1970's and includes the time of the Prague Spring in what was then Czechoslovakia.

The lives of the 4 central characters, Tomas, Tereza, Franz and Sabina are complex and complicated with love and infidelity running through the whole story.

With references to sex and with some swearing language throughout, this is heavy read in contrast to its title. It is quite a tragic tale in many ways with moments of lightness spotting along the horizon.
