This is a book that you will probably want to give up in the first place, but it is amazing after you realize its purpose.

In the beginning I read through some of the comments to understand if others were feeling the same way as I did. The very first character is written so, so bad in an attempt to create a relatable quirky 20 something individual. It hurts. This is the point where you want to give up.

Slowly you will understand that the characters are created in an extravagant artificial manner for a reason. They are absurd just because this makes the reader understand certain values easily.

I actually cried a few times. You can take away things about marriage, love, anxiety, parenting and being a human — depending on how you feel and what you need the most.

I have decided I'll read anything Fredrik Backman writes. Not much happened, but I love that. He writes the human condition well, where no one is really a bad guy, everyone is just trying their best, and sometimes they really mess up, but you understand why they did what they did and they're trying to be better. He writes books that makes me more empathetic and believe in humanity.

This one will have you thinking back to it for many months after in predicting! One of those twisty tales where everyone has some connection and it is all sort of brilliantly woven together. Easy to read but definitely requires your attention. A story about many stories but mostly about humans and all our rights and wrongs and the reasons behind them. Loved it!

This book left me in awe. I don’t think I’ve ever read a story told this way. It’s like the author give you the pitch at the beginning, then you spend the rest of the book zooming in slowly. I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy the characters because most of them were pretty insufferable at first, but I think the point of the book was to show that everyone has a story and motivations for why they  are the way they are. There are similar themes in A Man Called Ove.  I ended up loving all the characters, and this book became my favorite book of the year.

Fredrik Backman always tells great truths with dry humor and sincerity--I love listening to his books and soaking it all up. This one had some heavy themes, but was an entertaining tale about a bank robbery-turned-accidental hostage crisis at an apartment viewing.  Top quote: "Anyone can nurture a myth about themselves if they have enough manure."
