Gorgeous illustrations and poignant story, seen through the eyes of the author/illustrator young self. The Silent generation gave him a voice.

This memoir is almost surreal in how dysfunctional the authors family is. Such a horrific, traumatic experience and the way small depicts it is deeply moving. The shift between more cartoony and grotesque images help shift the tone for the few more light-hearted moments. Im surprised at the ending both in how small maintains contact with his family and also how quickly he goes through the later years. Theres so much left out from his later teen years that we’ll never get to know. It sounds like he broke the cycle of bad parenting, or at least i hope so.

Methodical in its examination, relentless in its retelling, and thunderous in visual style, I picked Stitches up on a whim at a book sale yesterday afternoon, began reading it a few hours ago, and finished it in one fell swoop. Stunning work, and visually arresting.
