good mystery with nice twists, but it was a tense read. the main character kept adding lie upon lie and you knew how it was going to end up. like watching a train wreck.

It was a good book. Definitely held my attention. There was a lot that irked me about the main character but it was an enjoyable read. Although, I guessed who had done it mid-way through the book and was right. I wish I could give half stars. I would have given this 3.5.

Great pacing kept me interested in this legal/murder thriller set in NC. I've heard a lot about John Hart, but hadn't gotten around to reading any of his material until now. The characters were pretty unsympathetic and miserable -- I couldn't empathize with anyone. Some seemed to be borderline stock characters as well. Better than the average thriller that I've encountered, with more emotional turmoil and depth from the protagonist, even if I didn't like him. If Good Reads would let me, I'd give this 2.5.

Hart's first book. Ever so slightly cheesy in spots, but he's great with the suspense, and my oh my, did he have me fooled about whodunnit! He can turn a beautiful phrase. I wish that he had developed a few more sympathetic characters in this one.
