This was actually the first old kingdom book I read. But it makes much more sense this time around. It was alright nothing spectacular but it was okay.

this was fun, a little solo adventure with nick doing his best with everything he’s learned and a lead into future adventures.

Almost didn’t read this one, being too excited for Goldenhand. So happy that I did though! It was short and sweet and showed you a little into the life of Nick and his PTSD from Abhorsen. It also plays nicely into the story after reading Clariel and understanding what someone who has both Charter and Free Magic is capable of.
Garth Nix… you did it again.

Basically a monster chase. Readable and definitely not bad. But I kind of wanted more. More details, more depth, more story. And it had a bit of an abrupt ending. And given the body count, it still seemed a little too easy.

Nothing massively wrong or right with this novella. However, compared to the previous novels in the series it leaves much to be desired.

This novella actually made me like Nick????

While this is far from the normal Old Kingdom story it was nice to get another view on life on the other side of the wall. It makes sense that Ancelstierre would have some sort of curiosity in Old Kingdom mysteries, so a secret spy force that wants to learn more about them is reasonable. A solid filler story between Abhorsen and Goldenhand, and I would definitely recommend reading it before Goldenhand or else the start of that novel will be rather confusing.
