My Heart is a Little Wild Thing by Nigel Featherstone. I’ve had to take a couple of days to really let this marinate before deciding what I thought. The settings are beautiful and honestly I could feel the grass, smell the dirt as it was turned, see the section of Pittwater rd as he described it. It tells the story of a 50 something year old man who finds himself after losing himself (read it and you’ll understand). It is about family relationships and how one person can be lost to duty as parents age. Or how the words and actions of a parent to a child can create a barrier that lasts a lifetime. I loved following Patrick as he runs away to find a favourite childhood memory and ends up finding honesty and hope as he wanders through the Aussie scrub. It is a love affair with the idyllic Aussie childhood holiday. With music. With the Bush. With small town people. With the world. With one man facing his fears and finding himself. With acceptance.
Patrick’s relationship with his mum is hard as well. Consider that the novel opens with ‘The day after I tried to kill my mother….’ Well that line appealed to my curiosity as someone who struggles with their mother daughter relationship.
Intense in part. Simple at its heart.

This was a strange book. I can't tell whether this is supposed to be like a nice encouraging character arc plotline where this kinda sketchy main character becomes a better person but he really didn't. From the start he just comes across as a whingy whining 35 yr old man child who hasn't formed any real connections with people in his life because he's too picky and lazy to do so WHICH IS FINE, like from a storytelling perspective it is FINE. Preferable even, cause then its like a nice satisfying self improvement plot.

But as you can guess, that didn't quite happen (for me at least). I saw no character improvement in chapter long descriptions of him having sex with a MARRIED MAN who HAS A KID. Which he didn't know tbf but then he finds out and CONTINUES to have an affair with him. and the rest of the book was just unnecessary detil abt his like like how he likes to go to nude beaches and like down hidden between the bushes and watch naked people walking around like man keep that to yourself thank you very much.

I’m not really sure how to give a review on this one. It was another case of, the cover got me!
I found this to be quite a heart-breakingly sad story. The main character’s voice wasn’t one that I found easy to read & I guess I felt pity for him throughout the story for the life he didn’t have… maybe? It was an odd book & I’m just unsure how I feel about the whole thing. There was nothing about it that really sold it for me.
