This is Caz Frear's debut novel and the first Cat Kinsella police procedural. Cat is a young Detective Constable with the Met Police in London, and one day she gets a strange case on her desk: a woman she knew 18 years ago in Ireland who mysteriously disappeared one day, is found murdered in the middle of London - and she had a new name. Cat has long suspected that her dodgy father had something to do with Maryanne Doyle's disappearance, but clearly he can't have murdered her - so what really happened? So begins a very complex case that draws Cat back to the past and to her very complicated relationship with her father and sister. Caz is flawed - she should immediately tell her boss of her connection and excuse herself from the case, but she simply plows on until she is in over her head.

This is excellently written, with believable characters, including her police colleagues. The reader has a dilemma - we want the murderer to be found but we don't want Cat to get into trouble for acting unprofessionally. The pace starts slow, then speeds up until we get a lot at once in the final chapters - and the twists are still coming.

I can't wait to read the next one!

it was pretty good, I read this in one sitting (overnight, not the best idea but the beginning was too gruesome to go to sleep on)

I'm just tired of the snarky, burnt out, cynical, depressed millennial adult fiction narrator idk! maybe it's just me but I could use a change. also not sure if I was just tired but the ending was a bit rushed imo

also don't blame teenage girls (MINORS) for the actions of adult men it just seemed a little slutshamey/victim blaming to me.... I know by the end Maryanne is showed to be a victim SORT OF BUT LIKE. ugh it was uncomfortable to read some of the characters talking about this 17 year old like that even though I know the author was probably trying to make the point that she was a kid and a victim
