Steel Magnolias the movie was filmed in my town, Natchitoches, Louisiana. It was quite the event for our quiet community, when Hollywood took over for a summer, when I was 10. I LOVE the movie. It was interesting to read the play...not the depth the movie has, but still good. If I had to choose between the play and the movie, though, the movie would win every time.

I performed this play in our high school production. I loved and cried watching the movie with Julia Roberts and Sally Field.

Read this for my directing class. It was ok. I'm not really into sappy stories, but this one was pretty good. The relationships between the women are pretty entertaining. I didn't like it well enough to choose a scene from it to direct.

This play just didn't really have much that really pulled you in. I mean, you kind of wonder what's going on, but honestly, it isn't that interesting. That being said, it wasn't that bad. It was actually pretty good. But it was nothing spectacular. Probably a lot better to be seen than read. And it's nice that it's just 6 girls, because that means that a lot of places will easily do this show.

Well, I liked reading this more than I liked watching the movie, but that's not saying a lot. There are a lot of great funny lines here (some that I don't think were in the film), and I think the play is tighter due to everything being set in Truvy's beauty shop. Still, the plot is basically "horrible stuff happens and life goes on", and --- besides featuring good dialogue from Louisiana women --- I don't know what the point of the play is.

Interesting note: this edition includes a detailed drawing of the beauty shop set, a property list of every item on this set (3 pages worth), a list of set changes from scene to scene (2 pages), and the costumes and wigs for each scene (2 pages). Aside from a [a:Tom Stoppard|293|Tom Stoppard|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/m_50x66-82093808bca726cb3249a493fbd3bd0f.png] play or two, I don't think I've seen this much business in a script before.
