”Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before.”
This poem is definitely worthy of its fame in the Victorian gothic genre.

But the raven, sitting lonely on the placid bust, spoke only
That one word, as if his soul in that one word he did outpour.
My entire knowledge of this poem before reading it was that episode of the Simpsons. I really enjoyed this! I read it while listening to the excellent Book Cheat podcast.
The foreboding atmosphere and sense of hopelessness and despair were great, and I love the rhyming Poe chose.
4.5 stars.

2nd read
I just reread this, and my question is, why didn’t I like this? I think now that I’ve subjected myself to reading more classics, and older books, whilst also getting out of the mindset that “poetry is pretentious”, I really liked this. This was really gothic, and really interesting.

We read this in class, and I feel bad giving this piece of literature, much less a classic, such a low 2 stars, but I just really didn’t like it. I didn’t hate is necessarily, but I just didn’t like it.
The poem was odd in itself, and while I did understand what Poe was trying to do and the whimsical aspect it had to it, The Raven and I just didn’t click. But, I’m going to stop criticizing a classic because people are going to hurt me.

It’s been a while since I first read The Raven and since then i’ve come back at it more times than I can count. The theme of slowly being submerged into darkness and losing hope which is then followed by madness and finally utter hopelessness in which you can’t even speak a word just gives me chills every time. I can say I have it almost memorized by now, it’s just my absolute favorite poem.

I have to agree with Gustave Doré the Raven is a perfect poem. A strike of genius. However, Doré‘s input was a drag to get through to say the least.
I’ve never had so much fun reading a poem over and over. The poem is five stars, the books and it’s exposition is a three. Only because all the tidbits of revisions and publications of the poem were fun to follow.
