I read the first book in this series nearly 6 years ago and while I found it entertaining upon reading, it left little to no impression on me afterward, and I only picked this one up to fulfill a reading challenge. Boy, am I glad that I did, as I enjoyed it far more than expected. [b:Maisie Dobbs|462033|Maisie Dobbs (Maisie Dobbs, #1)|Jacqueline Winspear|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1312066155l/462033._SY75_.jpg|976403] laid a lot of the groundwork for Maisie and her circumstances, and I was pleased to see her attempting to deal with the pain from the experiences in her past and move on with two potential and very different paramours here. The mystery is genuinely interesting, if a little too neatly wrapped up, and I liked the subplots with Billy and Frankie to help flesh them out as characters. I'd like to continue reading this series if the quality continues at this level.

I liked this one much more than the first, as it did not need to include so much back story (though I realize it's important to know that back story). I like to think that these historical myteries are based in truth, but honestly I have no idea.

Second in the Maisie Dobbs series and I think I enjoyed this one more than the first. Maisie is such a funny character and I love how this book explores her past a little more to show how she is the way she is. This book has her investigating the disappearance of an heiress and the case ends up being much more involved than she originally expects. The characters are so well-written and I love the way the author brings that time to life. Love this series.

Love the book, but very focused on PTSD from World War 1 and the Maise Dobbs character is very unique
