I read this book such a long time ago but I still wanted to give
It a review because I really do love the book.

I honestly don’t have a lot to complain about in this book and it’s such a good especially because it is the author’s debut book I believe. I remember the author promoting it on TikTok so much that I just had to read it and it did not disappoint.

I remember even using this book for an english book assignment got a good grade too.

The only thing that I didn’t like about the book was the love triangle and not because it was a polyamorous relationship it was because to me it felt like the relationship kinda came out of nowhere between the two boys.

I get the whole girl fell in love with childhood friend

And girl fell in love with big scary man she was imprisoned with and turned out to not be so scary

But I would’ve liked it better if the author went into the bond between the two guys, because it really felt like they got in a relationship to just cater to her so that she wouldn’t have to choose or something.

In this science fiction novel, we find a main female character who is:

1. Expressly “not like other girls”
2. Hated and ~not understood~ by her family because she’s fat and ugly (she has a unibrow)
3. Socialized into the female role of some ancient Chinese culture, yet somehow has perspectives and attitudes straight off of Tumblr
4. More powerful than any woman has ever been before, and is more powerful than almost every guy
5. Determined to live a life unbeholden to men, until she falls in love with two (both of the other main characters) who also happen to be into each other. And, although there’s no space for this in the provided culture, everyone is perfectly OK with starting a poly triangle.

In addition, there is so little world-building provided that large tracts of the book are functionally meaningless because there’s no way to understand what’s going on or why.

If you’ve been steeped in the Mecha genre of anime, this story might make more sense. Without that, it reads like very thinly disguised fanfic for a fandom you’re not in with a particularly unlikeable Mary Sue.

I almost DNF’d this book before the end is the first chapter. While I made it through to the end, I should’ve trusted my first-chapter judgment.

This book has a lot of issues with pacing. Given it’s going to be a series I don’t know why it needed to be so condensed. I’ve sat with it for a couple of days after finishing and I just really wish we got some more characterisation before pivotal moments. Other than this issue the book is a really great take on darling in the franxx/pacific rim and for me exceeds the former. I will be eagerly awaiting the sequel but hope it gives a chance for a greater understanding of the characters.
