Okay Ms. Robin Hobb, I am SAT.

The first book in this series didn't really impress me especially after Farseer trilogy. I loved some characters, mainly- Kennit, Wintrow, and Malta but I was left wanting a lot more.

The Mad Ship gripped me from the very starting. I was eager to follow the story from where it left off. The characters grew substantially and still managed their complexities.

I also really like Malta and Reyn

I am EXCITED to read the next book but I think I'll wait. I can't wait for the conclusion of this series (even after the mess Assassin's Quest was) but I am also scared for my favourite characters.

"half the evil in this world occurs while decent people stand by and do nothing wrong. it’s not enough to refrain from evil. people have to attempt to do right, even if they believe they cannot succeed."

listen, i ADORE this story. i love this universe and robin hobb’s writing, BUT with that being said, this book in particular was way too long in my opinion.
it took me so long to read it, i feel like there were too many point of views, and the chapters did not flow as seemingly as in the first installment.

i grew quite bored of kennit & wintrow’s chapters (and this whole storyline basically) and that makes me quite sad because those were my favorite in the first book.
also, the whole treatment of women… didn’t age well. i think all the women in this story are interesting and fleshed out, but some discourse on consent was definitely dated and disturbing to read about.

as for THE character development we all waited for (malta), i can’t wait to read more about her and her growth.

lastly, while i really enjoy this trilogy, i’m very impatient to go back to fitz’ adventures!

trigger warning for talks of consent, rape attempts and rape, gore and violence.

Ship of Magic had me worried that Liveship was going to turn into a slog for me but this book proved me wrong constantly. Unlike in SoM where characters mostly stayed to their own storylines, in this one they all mixed together, moved around and created a far more compelling plot to supplement the dozens of amazing character moments that were already there in the first book. If SoM was a somewhat slow establishment of who all the characters are, Mad Ship really just lets them loose to interact and develop alongside each other. There are so many back to back to back chapters in here of amazing character work, dialogue, and world-building. I loved the additions of some newer, smaller POVs as well (with maybe the exception of some boring Reyn scenes) and the tension in many of the final scenes is unmatched. Whereas in SoM only one plotline really had a flashy ending in my opinion, this ending just kept going and had stuff to offer for every plot thread. Can't wait to get the the third one.

Ship of Magic was like 3.5-4 stars. This one is very easily 5.
