5 Stars! Such a great novella full of action. Miles being Miles getting thrown into complicated scenarios and figuring ways out to overcome all odds. A very fun and enjoyable read. Can’t wait for my next Miles adventure!

Quotes:
“If you can’t be seven feet tall, be seven feet smart.” (p423)
“He must copy that awkwardness next time. Of such little details were cover identities made. And blown.” (p429)
“Do cats eat rats? Do rats eat cats…?” (p456)
“Freeze and play invisible? Miles settled on this last defense by default—he was paralyzed with terror.” (p460)
“Human is as human does.” (p464)
“He sprang up and cracked his head on the low ceiling, and dropped back down, the stars in his eyes unrelated to love at first sight.” (p465)
“I adore tall women, ask anyone who knows me. Beside, I made the happy discovery some time back that height difference only matters when we’re standing up. When we’re lying down it’s, ah, less of a problem…” (p466)
“‘And the lesson is, it’s not how much force you use. It’s where you apply it’… ‘Now we really have to get out of here.’ Lest her next tactics lesson turn out to be, Don’t blow up the bridge you’re standing on…” (p473)
“‘There’s no shame in a strategic retreat to a better position’… Still don’t trust me, eh? Well, maybe those who have been greatly betrayed need great proof…” (p474)
“I mainly stick around due to an overwhelming curiosity to see what happens next.” (p493)
“No. Don’t wish that. I have a better idea. Wish to be yourself. To the hilt. Find out what you’re best at, and develop it. Hopscotch your weaknesses. There isn’t time for them… Don’t wish to be normal. You’ll only waste your precious time in futile frustration. Wish to be great! That at least you have a fighting chance for. Great at whatever you are…” (p497)
“Easier to preach than practice…” (p498)

I'm comfort rereading my way through the Vorkosigan Saga again. This one isn't terribly comforting, though…

I'll just quietly nope my way out of this one. Bujold, why couldn't they just be friends?

It's nice to be back reading about Miles. This is definitely a re-read. And yet I had a little trouble getting into the story at first. Miles is just so madcap. And Bel constantly throwing itself at Miles gets old. But Taura. Taura is something different. And Jackson's Whole is just one of those super rich settings. I don't recall seeing the mad scientist again though I looked and he does show up at least briefly again.

A rollicking read and an excellent demonstration of humanity.

Not my favourite--there was a section with quite a bit of fighting and evading that threatened to drop this to a respectable 3 stars (the sort of thing that's fun to watch in a movie, but doesn't work so well in text--as opposed to the inner thoughts and feelings of characters, which work great on the page, but are hard to convey on screen)--but she's so good at writing, and she's pulled it back up near the end, when I thought everything was over, with some extra neatening and tidying of the plot-lines that paid off nicely.

(Note: 5 stars = amazing, wonderful, 4 = very good book, 3 = decent read, 2 = disappointing, 1 = awful, just awful. I'm fairly good at picking for myself so end up with a lot of 4s). I feel a lot of readers automatically render any book they enjoy 5, but I grade on a curve!
