I'm not sure I always liked Rin, but I liked the Cike and Kitay and I think though it was brutal that it was brutally honest. About war, discrimination, crimes and colonialism. It's not beautified in any way and I think that's the only right way to tell this story.

I'm utterly destroyed.
How do I contact R.F. Kuang? I need to send her my therapy bills.

SpoilerFire and water looked so lovely together. It was a pity they destroyed each other by nature.

The writing and the characters are still amazing in the second book. The author does an amazing job at expanding the world and its consequences on the characters. In line with the first book the traumas and complexities of war are very explicitly explored and it makes for a very interesting (but heavy) story to read. You definitely have to be interested in heavy world building and political intrigue to enjoy this book.
I did find it a little hard to read through the first half, since it has a slower pace, and it has a LOT more focus on politics and characters psyches, than on the more "fantastical" side of the story. A lot of bad things happen, and it did start to feel so constantly hopeless, that it made it harder for me to read.
But the ending was just soo good and tense that it made it entirely worth it.
It is a difficult series to read thanks to its heavy topics and extremely grey characters, but I think that it's one of those series that, if you like adult fantasy and moral dilemmas, you just have to read. (But be sure to look at the TWs first)

There's nothing coherent i can say about this book apart from the fact this book annihilated my very existence. Rf Kuang is a phenomenal writer who's so ruthless with her characters it's almost scary.
