As a fan of both Supernatural and Edgar Allan Poe, I was so excited for this book and I have never been more disappointed in a book. The author clearly does not know the characters of Sam and Dean. He made Dean seem like an absolute idiot and Sam seem like a self-centered jerk. Not to mention he doesn't even seem to know what Dean looks like as he certainly doesn't have blue eyes and he isn't short. He spent way too much of the book describing places in NYC, songs, musicians, and even coffee and coffee cups. Also spent a lot of time giving backgrounds on characters we didn't need to know about and not enough time developing characters we did need to know. There were points in the book where I wasn't even sure whose pov, I was reading until at least a page into it and then the ending just made absolutely no sense. Also I'm not sure this book was even edited as I found a bunch of mistakes, like he mentioned agoraphobia while talking about a fear of heights. The fear of heights is acrophobia. There is so much more I was disappointed in with this book but the bottom line is that if you love Supernatural, do yourself a favor and skip this book

the book itself -the story and what’s happening, the cases and how it’s solved- that’s not horrible.

but Sam and Dean? not Sam and Dean at all.
This is actually one of the most OOC -out of character, if you don’t read too many fanfics as i do and see that term used a lot- try to write those boys i seen.
and sad to say that it was actually published as an official supernatural story too. there are so many more accurate writers out there -even back in 2007- that could have done a lot better with those characters and how they are played by the actors.

especially horrendous to me was how often Dean is put down and more or less described as stupid.
also he lets sam drive the Impala on a city like New York. excuse me? that guy would rather put that car into a parking lot outside of the city and use the subway to get around than let Sam drive that car in a big city!
sure in season 1 and 2 Sam drove the car a handful of times but since most of them ended in some kind of accident or purposefully ramming Baby into stuff… let’s just all agree that’s one of the most OOC moments for Dean one could possible use.

Sam was extremely condescending in this, especially in a good amount of scenes in regards to thinking badly about Dean.
And while i agree that especially early seasons Sam -when this is set- is behaving a good amount of times like a spoiled little child and disrespects what Dean had done for him and is still doing for and with him… Sam was never as extremely down putting as he is in this book.

for an author who claims to love the series and how they are portrayed by the actors at the beginning of the book, the author did a great job not actually writing realistic representations of them.

But… it’s not a bad book if you don’t love the show and know the characters well.
because beside the not fitting characterization of the two main characters the book wasn’t horrible.

the cases that where talked about where okay and how it was all solved worked too.
was it sometimes a bit too easy and too convenient at the right moment? sure.
was it a bit strange to keep meeting people that knew their dad and through that knew the boys? sure. but that would all be alright overall.

could this story be done without the unnecessary details of things that didn’t matter at all -like the heavy focus on specific street names that kept being repeated over and over as of the reader is going there themselves and needs to know the exact address- and the constant name dropping of bands or song titles… sure that would have worked.
but a lot of books have some things in them where i question why the author felt the need to keep bringing details of those things up since they aren’t important at all to the overall story.

it’s not the best written or most interesting story and there are a lot of better fanfiction out there that do what this book tried to do, but it’s also not the worst thing ever.

just go in with knowing that it won’t be the same -how could it be- and not every writer can capture characters well.
if you want something pretty quick and mostly fun to read and has a little hint of supernatural?
go for it.

if you need this type of story to be perfectly be character and hate every second of behavior of loved characters don’t fit?
stay away.

Supernatural is my favorite show (along side The Flash) and this was really good, and the characters felt like themselves most of the time, the only reason it's not getting a five stars is because, Dean sometimes didn't feel like himself (and Sam too, a bit). But you can still tell the author actually did research besides just watching the show. I also loved the playlist at the end of the book, it was such a cool extra, with VERY cool music.

Will definitely be reading the second book.
