I can’t believe I’m actually caught up on this series…18 books, whew!😅 I was not a huge fan of the last one (The Madness of Crowds), but this is Louise Penny back at her best!

I love the backstory in this one. We learn a lot about Gamache’s very early career when he is still working closely with his mentor. The reader also gets more details about the first homicide case Ganache brings Jean-Guy in for. There have been details sprinkled in throughout the series, but this brings it full circle. I LOVE how we are still learning more about the characters, even 18 books in!

I also enjoyed the connection to details in previous books. This is very interesting and added complexity to the overall story. There were many twists and turns, and the ambiguity made it fun to try to figure out how things would end up.

As with all of Louise Penny’s books, this one explores humanity and human nature. This is something I’ve really enjoyed about throughout the whole series. I cannot wait for her new one at the end of October!

This is book 18 in the series and I have been reading them in order. Both my wife and I enjoy this series. This book has two timelines, which eventually merge. The first is when Armand meets for the first time his now number two person in the Surete Homicide team, Jean Guy Beauvoir. Armand is called to the scene of a young woman found washed ashore on a remote lake in Northeast Quebec. Jean Guy has been relegated to the basement by his Captain, but Armand chooses Jean Guy to go with him to the scene.
The second timeline is the present day, where a secret room has been discovered in Three Pines. There are subjects in this book which may upset some people: child molestation and a serial killer.
The two timelines are about fifteen years apart, but the incidents in the first timeline come back to haunt Armand and Jean Guy. I read this library book in 3 days, and I recommend it to mystery fans and fans of the author.

Another great Gamache book! A little dark for my taste but a thrilling read with complex themes.

It's hard to follow the author in the setting. What time frame, which character, etc?
