It's hard to follow the author in the setting. What time frame, which character, etc?

My only disappointment with this book is that I must wait for her to publish the next one.

I always love Louise penny’s books. This one is really dark subject-matter wise, and there are things in the plot that I need to reread to figure out how everything in the ending comes about, but like all her books, it’s captivating and I couldn’t put it down.
