Such an interesting composition in terms of mood. The book started of quite “fun” going to classes, school drama etc. and then suddenly plummeted into this fatal seriousness, panic and darkness that only became deeper as the book went on. The change in mood was a shock to the system and worked so incredibly well in conveying the feeling when war suddenly becomes a reality. A great study in power, war, oppression, abuse, trauma and most of all violence. I can’t stretch the violence part quite enough, it was much worse than I thought it would be, explicit and more terrible than any horror film I’ve seen.

Very well written, as is everything I've read by Kuang. Just so gosh darn sad and angry, I couldn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to.

I strongly agree with all the positive praise this book has received. The main character deals with many conflicts that help develop her each time. It has a very interesting view of gods and worship which really explores humanity and morals in a way often not seen in fiction. The first third to first half of the book fully explains characters and the world and doesn't slow the pace or seem boring. Even though the entire book deals with hardships and rough circumstances, the last half of the book can get incredibly dark and detailed, it truly digs into how bad war can be and the toll it takes on people physically, mentally, emotionally, and societally. I hope the next two books continue this great story, and great writing.

Fuck. Wow.

I'm not okay and it's going to take me time to recover.

Some sections of this book are BRUTAL. As for the ending - I don't think Rin was justified, but I can see why she did what she did.

The fact that lots of it mirrors real life is... depressing. War is horrible.

The only minor issue I have is the pacing - the last few chapters felt rushed and some of the characters suffered as a result of their stories being tied up too quickly. Other than that, I loved this book.
