It’s amazing but it’s also an intense book. If you’re okay to read about the atrocities of war and the horrors of mankind (especially towards women), you’ll find it in this book. It was incredibly well written but I needed to take a break a few times.

A fascinating start to a series! This book interlinks with history in a very interesting way and has strong, although dark theming. The main character is very multifaceted, and although the POV is 3rd person limited, her flaws and complexities become quite apparent throughout the book. This novel is study of war, society, religion, classism, the complex history of imperialism, an a peasant girl's place within all of that.

The writing is beautiful. I also loved the audio book narrator! Fantasy books like this aren't always the easiest to take in through an audio format, but the narrator's great work really helped with that.

such an amazing book, however it is not an enemies to lovers. i don’t think the book series will have a happy ending bc IT IS A WAR-CENTRIC book! the main character may end up being unlikable for some though, since she make rash decisions but again she a girl in a war torn country. book rlly complex

I have a lot of feelings about this one. The first half was perfection, but the ending was a bit disappointing. I think it's because the story became more and more untethered as it went on, and it kind of ran away with itself at the end. I still thought it was a great book, just a bit rocky like you'd expect from any debut.
Also, READ THE CONTENT WARNINGS. I can't stress this enough. I thought I was prepared because I'd heard about how traumatizing chapter 21 is, but I was still horrified. I'm glad R. F. Kuang went there because the Nanjing massacre is a terrible part of history that deserves more awareness, but that didn't make it any less difficult to read. I had to step away from the book and recover before continuing. For that reason, I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who feels they might have difficulties with the content.
