When they say this book is dark, they mean it. Do not be fooled by the beginning chapters of this book that feign hopeful stories of aspiring soldiers. The darkness of this book has subjected itself to one specific chapter, chapter 21. There are gruesome, cruel, horrifying depictions of war crimes. Nothing will prepare you for it. Read trigger warnings. Please.

There were so many twists and turns throughout this book! I recognized scenes from WWII China immediately, and many of those moments were very difficult to read. I also got the sense as the story progressed that Rin was becoming something of an anti-hero, which turned out to be true. I found her choices at the end of the novel to be deeply disturbing and I really hope her growth takes an upward turn in book 2!
As an aside, I also hope Nezha is not dead (words I never thought I would say aloud).

Damn this book is brutal to read. Even with my fairly basic knowledge of Sino-Japanese relations it was horrifying and morbidly intriguing to see represented in this way.

While I enjoyed this book, I think there is something incredibly flawed about Rin, which I know I the point. It’s just frustrating. There was also a few things that I felt weren’t conveyed as well as they could have been. Namely why Rin was so ready to be a soldier for a country that didn’t want her. She spends most of the book bemoaning anything that isn’t the war or goes against being a “good soldier” and I do not understand why. Where does her loyalty to her country or from? I hope that is explored a little bit more.

Overall though this book made me literally cry, something that hasn’t happened in a while. Interested to see where the series goes.
