It took me a while to be on a mindset that allowed me to finish this trilogy. Even though it's not that explicit, as in explicitly gore, IMO this is quite gritty and it's not often that I'm up for it. The bigotry of some characters alone is enough to make my skin crawl.

I'm amazed Joanna can stand on her legs, because she went through so much shit in her life, personal and professional. If was me I'd spend my days in fetal position on a corner of my house. Don't even start me about Rue, I'm always awed by how resilient characters (and often real life people) can be.

Anyway, these barely had the time to catch a break and again were involved with some shady stuff. Joanna makes me have some mixed feelings, like I didn't love how her, even though is not her intention, always seems to disregard a bit of Rue's needs when pursuing leads, like she cannot let things go and I get why, but it puts Rue in some awful situations. But I wouldn't have her any other way and I'm quite happy Rue had the chance to take back control of the narrative at some point and hopefully she'll continue improving, mentally and physically. She, both of them, deserves a break. And everyone else to be fair, so much collateral...

Lastly, one of the things I like about Barbara is that most of the time she keeps me on my toes. I like how more often than not the villains' actions and whys come as a completely surprise to me, especially their actions, and that makes the whole gritty bit worth it. LoL

4 stars. Just as good as book one. This series is so well done and entertaining. It’s gritty and real and I enjoy it immensely. I love Joanne and we got some great growth from her (and Rue) here which was wonderful to see. Also, her relationship with Rue is in a really good place. The stakes in the plot were really high in this with some intense action scenes and moments. Also, that ending left me wanting more. I’m so excited to see where it goes from here.
