Some lovely descriptions of the countryside, and some pretty intense ones of the pursuit by the headless horseman. Humorous at times, and also cringe-worthy in others as some POVs just didn't age well.

Overall, not a bad short story. But the cinematic versions of this definitely elaborate and extend a lot of creative liberties.

This is a wittily written classic story produced with the full ugliness of barely concealed Text-To-Speech software. This classic tale is out of copyright so should be freely available on any major platform.. so I'd recommend listening to a different version!

As a product of its time, it is filled with dark humour poking fun at the moral brutality of school corporal punishment, the presumption of a man courting an heiress, and various foibles of village folk. It dallies on the cozy ambience of a harvest season fat with the feasts of fruit and fowl, bucolic rambles, and the wood chopping and fencing that fill rural village life.

Oh and ghost stories. And some sexist rubbish about flirting and being a coquette. And ooff casual racism, which isn't a big shock considering when it was written.. but worth bearing in mind.

It's a fine, short read. Can be finished in one sitting. I'm unable to give a proper, in-depth opinion since the story is so short

Very short story and much of it is just very long unnecessary descriptions, so nothing really happens. I much prefer the Tim Burton Sleepy Hollow movie. It has a more entertaining story.

Be aware of the dated racist language.

Absolutely not. This is just a story where we glorify a "nice guy" who is trying to woo a woman that he doesn't deserve because he wants her money. He gets spooked away by a ghost or, potentially, the main "love" interest's actual love interest. I personally hope it was the latter. So, Irving gets points for that option but loses a lot for misogyny.

Sleepy Hollow has a lot of flaws, but if you’re going to read it during the spooky season, Tom Mison makes this edition a treat.

Huh. That was weird. It was essentially 95% exposition, 2% action, and 3% conclusion. The exposition has great fall spooky vibes at times, but I expected much more from this! It’s interesting how a fable can be used and reused and parodied and then reimagined again…the echos become much bigger than the original sound. It lead me to believe the source material would be bigger or longer or just more. I should note that this isn’t even really source material in some ways. There have been many stories with headless horseman. Perhaps Irving was just the first to Americanize the image? It really feels like this short story would be more successful even shorter, especially if told around a campfire!
