This is the third book in the Hetty Feather series, and shows Hetty more grown up, and in my opinion, mature, but still her fiery personality. I really loved this book, and also reread this MANY times.

By the time I reached the third book in this trilogy I just wanted to be finished. I no longer like the character of Hetty Feather, but was still interested in what happened to her. I guessed early on from the blurb that she would end up with the ‘mysterious figure’, because things were never going to work out with her father and I also couldn’t imagine it working out with Jem either.
That ‘mysterious figure’ turned out to be
SpoilerMadam Adeline from the travelling circus that Hetty visited when she was 5 and 10 years old. I did not approve of the ending of her going off to work in the circus, even though she enjoyed it so much as a child. I just don’t think that she will be happy there for any length of time. She spoke of her annoyance of repetitive tasks at each of the hospital, Mr Buchanan’s house and the cotton household in turn. She also spoke of how she disliked the boys leering at her when she worked as a mermaid . So somehow I can’t quite imagine her in the circus where she will have to perform the same show over and over and will have many people looking down on her.

It is interesting how Wilson managed to change my opinion of Monksby from a quaint little fishing village to a small town with mean spirited people in such a short space of time. I guess that this follows with Hetty’s ideas of where her mother grew up and then the reality of what it was like there.
I came to dislike Jem and the way that he treated Hetty as a young child even though she is now 14 (although maybe he would have less trouble confusing her with a child if Wilson had remembered to let Hetty mature…). I did however like Janet and worked out early on, before Hetty read her diary, that she loved Jem. Therefore I felt sorry for her that Hetty had come along and ruined her chances with him. Although with the way Jem acted, she may have dodged a bullet.
One thing that I will say about this trilogy is that it gives a very good insight into what life was like in the nineteenth century. Not only does it show you what life is like for foundlings from Hetty’s perspective, but it also touches on many other classes and situations, including: circus folk, country folk, fishing villages, freak shows, servants, life on the streets, life for the middle class and the rich.
Basically I am pleased to have finished this book, I was not happy with the ending but I did enjoy it a bit and so it receives three stars.

Unfortunately, this book made me give up reading Wilsons books for good. I thoguht finding teh dad almost straight away was kind of dumb and then i just stopped reading. In my mind i have Hetty's future and i much prefer my own ending (which involved Jem) than anything Wilson wrote in the first chapter of this.
