Nejpříjemnější překvapení za posledních pár let pro mne je James Herriot. Čekal jsem knihy o zvířatech, ale nakonec je to samozřejmě hlavně o lidech. Krásný jazyk, klidný, laskavý a věcný styl vyprávění.

Spolu s dalším dílem [b:All Things Bright and Beautiful|13124135|All Things Bright and Beautiful (All Creatures Great and Small, #2)|James Herriot|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1332614705s/13124135.jpg|2752234] zatím nejlepší čtení tohoto roku a knihy, ke kterým se budu asi ještě vracet.

we begin as james herriot takes his first veterinary position, assisting dr. siegfried farenon in the yorkshire dales. a lot of their work is dealing with sick farm animals: cows, horses, sheep- as well as their increasingly bizarre owners. the stories are hilarious! not surprisingly, i have a soft spot for the stories about cats and dogs- especially tricky woo. in between cases, james clumsily woos his future wife, helen, in scenes too adorable for words.

i'm not sure whether to call this fiction or memoir- james herriot was really dr. alfred wight, and he's changed all the names in the book. i'm not certain how much is true.

when i was young we used to listen to james herriot on cassettes in the car, and these stories make me very happy.

Recently I watched the first season of “All Creatures Great and Small” on PBS and instantly feel in love with the story. I had not planned on reading the books, but settled on enjoying the program on Masterpiece Theatre.

A good friend of mine who has in her possession the complete book series (a cherished collection from her mother) texted me one morning that she had left me surprise on my front porch. Inside a reusable shopping bag were the four ACGAS books, and very clearly loved books at that.

I decided to do a “read-along” with the newly recorded audiobook, narrated by Scottish actor, Nicholas Ralph (the actor who plays James Herriot in the new version of ACGAS). I want to take a moment here to celebrate the narration of this book. Nicholas Ralph absolutely brought this story to life. His accent slipped seamlessly from Scottish, to Yorkshire, to the Queen’s English. His ability to voice all the characters was masterfully done; I always knew which character was speaking by the reader’s tone. I understand that the original audiobook recordings were done by English actor Christopher Timothy (who played Herriot in the 1978-1990 BBC version of ACGAS).

While the front of the book claims that this book is “the warm and joyful memoirs of an animal doctor”, the book is actually considered a work of fiction.
James Herriot is a pen name for English veterinary surgeon James Alfred Wright. The books are loosely based on his own experiences as young graduate who is hired to be an assistant to an establish veterinary surgery in Thirsk, Yorkshire, close to the Yorkshire Dales.

This first book is beautiful. I don’t know how else to describe this story. There is great detail given in all sorts of veterinary surgeries and treatments, but I never got lost in verbiage. I fell in love with the characters and life in the Dales. The author masterfully painted me a beautiful picture of this area in Yorkshire. I want to climb hills and stare out at the moors with maybe a wee lamb in my lap and head back into my house for a supper of Yorkshire Pudding and mashed potatoes with a brown gravy. There is so much heart in this book; I was laughing out loud one moment, weeping in another, and sighing with contentment at certain happy outcomes.

I wish I had discovered this book last year, I definitely needed this kind of happy in my life. I am so looking forward to reading the next book, “All Things Bright and Beautiful.”
