Most wasted time I’ve ever spent in my life. Save your money, time, and sanity.

After a week of trying to read this book and only getting 90 pages in, I had to DNF it. The characters have very few traits that make me care about what happens to them. The plot is so slow, it feels like nothing has happened and I’m 100 pages in. Picking this book up felt like a chore, and finishing it an obligation to my ego. I’m sure it is a great book for someone — that someone is definitely not me.

I don’t remember who influenced me to read this story but I found it overly hyped, disjointed in the writing style and just plain boring. The kids in the story, if they’d been mine, made me want to scream for their spoiled brat behavior and don’t get me started on all the adults. I should not have continued reading at half way, but I persevered. 1.5 rounded to two for the actual plot. OH! and WTAH is with all the random things? Deer, Flamingos, Teeth?!?!?!?!?!

This book is written with a beautiful prose and attention to detail. The issues of race, family, class, prejudice, fear and uncertainty all blends together to make it a truly well-written story. The two families crossing paths are like two ships in the night, navigating unfamiliar waters, lost without knowing where they are and whether or not they are going to collide.

I was drawn into the lazy, chill summer days, the expectancy of withdrawing from boring normal days and retreating with your loved ones to have fun, indulge, swim, enjoy and be free. The normality being interrupted by the backdrop of the scary, the unknown, the terrifying, looming in the distance and possibly right inside your home, might even be in your body.

Masterfully done, would give it ten stars if I could. I recommend everyone to read this on a hot solitary summer day, where you have time to enjoy the craftsmanship behind this story and the story itself.

What an odd but interesting book. Has something ominous happened? Or not? A feeling of dread starts subtle and increases steadily throughout the book. I suspect this book is mostly to make you think about how YOU would react in a possible country/worldwide emergency situation. I found myself frustrated at the choices and behaviors of these characters, but also understood it’s hard to know how one would react. Interesting read.

the writing wasn't my style and you could tell all of the women characters were written by a man
