incredibly bummed to hear that 5 out of 8 bear species likely won’t make it past this century if humans don’t make some big environmental changes. well researched and balanced, though i didn’t care for the author’s voice towards nonwhite cultures at times. but that one lady did literally say she would rather be attacked by a bear than a human.

A naturalist look at bears, their history, their role in human culture, and their grim future…

Eight Bears: Mythic Past and Imperiled Future by Gloria Dickie is a fairly informative take on eight of the most important bears on earth…

Each chapter (either devoted to a single bear species aside from one chapter that covers two unrelated Vietnamese bears) spotlights a different region of the earth and the bears that call it home.

Sadly, some of this information includes Ed declining populations, health info, and even the use of some of these bears for holistic remedies. However, there is the pop culture aspect as you learn about the real world animal inspiration for key fictional bears like Baloo and Paddington.

Each chapter is fairly brief and it doesn’t overwhelm you with data. In fact, they were mostly broken up into a series of historical and cultural anecdotes mixed In with the author’s own experiences.

Worth checking out if you are interested in bears or the ways animals have influenced us…and how we are sadly affecting their long term survival…
