Library science student Anne has her heart set on spending her summer internship at a new, modern library in a town just a little too far from home to be able to commute. Instead, she is disappointed to find her assignment is in the county library, a dull backwater just a bus ride away from home. No testing out independence for Anne!
Once she gets settled in at the county library, she ends up having to drive the bookmobile; this part of the job exposes her to many people and ways of life.
Someone gave me a copy of this book when I was about 12. I loved it. I reread it every few years. Set in rural New Jersey during WWII, its main message is that what you think you want may not actually be the best thing for you.
