Truly awful. This book’s only redeeming quality is its brevity. Otherwise I probably would have given up on it well before reaching the end. Kate is a halfway sympathetic character, and I would actually have liked to understand her personality better, but everything else about this book is superficial and trite. Add an utterly sexist monologue in the culminating scene and you have a completely failed effort to bring Shakespeare into the modern day.

Sadly I haven't enjoyed most of the Hogarth Shakespeare books, but admittedly this is the best one I've read so far. Taming of the Shrew is a hard one to adapt for the modern age, and Tyler handled it well, even if the pacing was all over the place.

I haven't read The Taming of The Shrew but I found this light-hearted book charming

Not changing the rating but I do appreciate how Kate was characterized as well as how Poytr’s backstory was slowly fleshed out (the bit about tinned peaches got me). However, I can’t really get behind the last chapter before the epilogue because it felt almost out of place but maybe that’s just me?

This was a great modern adaptation of The Taming of the Shrew, though admittedly not my favourite of Shakespeare’s works.

I loved this on audio and think the narrator did a great job of adding depth to the characters.

Looking forward to more in the Hogarth Shakespeare series!

As a taming of the shrew fan, this is just not it

Hated the fact that the main character called “hikikomori” which is a type of severe social withdrawal frequently described in Japan (often due to untreated social anxiety and depression) as, “that Japanese disease”. I know she’s supposed to be quirky and deadpan, but as a Japanese American residing in Japan, that didn’t sit right with me AT ALL. I don’t need my quirky/different-from-the-other-girls kind of main characters to be ignorant as well. It kind of just ruined the rest of the book for me as I didn’t really care for her after that quip.
