the first half: so sad and so true. reminds me of metamorphosis and bartelby and heart of darkness. the second half: way too long. nobody cares about boxing. boring.
maybe that's the point - to show us how we waste our lives on crap that kills us.

This is a cautionary tale, in short story form, and certainly a decent snap-shot of working class 1905 society in the San Francisco Bay Area. A tough young man fails to consider his own mortality while showing off for his young bride-to-be in a prize-fight.

Really unpleasant on a number of levels. Disappointing because I've been a fan of London's other work.
