איזה בלאגן. ספר שמאד לא נעים לקרוא, מאחר שהסופר לא ארגן לעצמו את קווי העלילה לפני הכתיבה.
התובע הציבורי הבכיר במיאמי, אייב בקאהם, נשוי לכלבה תככנית בשם אנג'לינה. אשתו הראשונה סמנתה, נפטרה מסרטן, ולמורת רוחה של אנג'לינה, הוא ממשיך לטפל בגיסו חולה הנפש, שמעסיק אותו מסביב לשעון.
בזירה המקצועית, אייב מנסה לתפוס רוצח סדרתי שקוטל נשים לבנות שהתרועעו עם שחורים, אך הראיות מובילות אליו.
עד כאן הכל נשמע נהדר, אבל מפה מסתעפים המון קווי עלילה נוספים שמסתבכים זה בזה, ובשלב די מוקדם הסופר מאבד את הידיים והרגליים, שוכח איך לצאת מכל קווי העלילה ולא מצליח לסגור את כולם. בסוף יש סמטוכה אחת שלמה וסיום מבאס.

I liked the story, obviously well enough to read in basically one sitting. Our main character, Abe, is a prosecutor who is attached to a serial killer case: the Cutter has been murdering white women who were in interracial relationships in Florida using a machete. But the latest murder is someone he used to know - a young brilliant Black lawyer. Is she a victim or not? He is a recent widow and a newlywed. He lies whenever cornered. His new wife is petulant and jealous. She has a temper. Does she have something to do with this last murder? Does he? And here's where I don't know if I'm being fair in my review. Am I taking points off because I don't like the characters? Are they so well written as unlikable that I am punishing the whole book? I couldn't tell you. I just I can't see myself giving it more than three stars after finishing it. Unreliable narrator and unresolved plotlines round out the story. It reads fast.
Other things I would take into account -- story completely fails the Bechtel test. Women and their presence/conversation are used to either further the needs of the male characters or fridged, again to further the male narrator's story. Boo.
Recommended for fans of Gone Girl. But, not strongly recommended.

This was an average murder mystery w/ the FBI and local cops trying to catch a serial killer. The secondary plot was that the local prosecutor becomes a suspect when his wife disappears and he can't explain some questionable events. I took it as a measure of good writing that I'd get so irritated with the cops almost trying to frame him, to force him into the suspect role, that I had to put the book down and calm down. :) Kind of shades of Gone Girl. I enjoy Grippando books and I enjoyed this one.
