Was going to go with three stars, but realized it was my expectation that this was a light, fluffy rom-com that was bringing it down, not actual flaws in the book. Note - the first half of this book is heavy on grief. And secrets. And dementia. The romance happens towards the end. I really enjoyed the journey that the characters went on, and I felt that the growth they experienced was genuine. I also liked that the plot was unpredictable at times. I did think the 'romance' element was a little weak and didn't totally buy the relationship at the end, but it was such an enjoyable read that I'm willing to overlook it. Not light and fluffy by any stretch, but a great read.

I loved it so much. I love just how mature the characters are, how self aware and how accountable they were. That was so amazing to see.

The romance could have been a bit better but it was all together lovely. Like a warm cup of coco on a cold dreary day.

Loved it!

4.5 ⭐️ what a beautiful story about friendship, grief, moving on, prejudice and learning how to fully embrace who you are and standing up for it❤️ I really needed this book without knowing it.
From now on I am definitely going to read more from this author!

I suddenly remembered I love, love Mhairi (I love her name). I did a marathon read of her books when I first read her. Then forgot. I'm glad though because now I can re-read.

Gave up and I'll stay away from MM from now on.

Having experienced 3 of her books, MM drags you through the trenches for very little romantic payoff. I understand her book leans towards the contemporary literature genre with a minor romantic subplot, but the books are focused more on useless banter (e.g. 15 pages of trivia game just to establish a geeky friend group) and descriptors of bars rather than human emotions.

I really wanted to love this book. There were parts that were so beautiful and hit all the right targets for me but other parts fell short. This is a contemporary fiction with a subplot of romance and I enjoyed how she touches on all these relatable life experiences of growth and hurt. I found the FMC to be likable and relatable. I am excited to read more from McFarlane.
