2/24 So far this book is really funny. I haven't read one of her books since I was in my twenties. She's one of the only authors I wrote a letter to, telling her how much I related and how funny she is, and she wrote back! Anyway, here we are midlife. The first chapter was a bit bumpy, but now, part-way in I have laughed numerous times.

Verdict is still out.

Honestly... I quit this book. I laughed a few times, but it was just not doing it for me. I guess I just don't connect with it.

Fun and funny, classic Laurie Notaro essays. I read Idiot Girls when I was younger and connected to it, and I connect with this book now that I’m older.

Laurie writes a good amount about body acceptance in this book, however there is a part early on where she is critical about dress choices for bridesmaids in bigger bodies. It’s contradictory and cringy compared to all the pro aging and size acceptance stuff later on. I can see why someone unfamiliar with Laurie’s work would stop there and say no thanks ( as some reviews state they did). It’s unfortunate because there’s so much good stuff here. Maybe a future edition will nix that part.

The stories at the end of the book were the most authentic and heartfelt. I felt her writing was exaggerated to an extreme level that sometimes made it hard to continue reading. She has a great content and writing ability but needs to tone down exaggerating in my opinion.

Excuse me while I never read this book again.
I guess you have to appreciate a certain sense of humor to read this book.
As someone who is middle aged and to works with the aging population I felt like this book was portraying the message: You are old, you have to dress at Chico's there is no hope for your body.
I don't remember how or why I got this book but I would like the part of my life back I wasted reading this.
Blech!

Excuse Me While I Disappear

Fantastic hilarious read. So much truth in those pages. Laughed so hard I cried through many chapters. Brutal hard look at midlife with humor mixed in.
