Somewhat of a love it or hate it type book. I wish I could rate it on how much I enjoyed it (3.0) vs. how much I think many others might enjoy it (4.25). I saw five star reviews written in excited all caps, and a one star that said they wish they could fight the book next to a Burger King dumpster LOL.Ā

As others said, I think it kind of dragged on. Some of the twists were predictable - but I find it hard to believe the reviews where people said they predicted ALL of them. The ending did really shock me. Part of me wishes Iā€™d read Cliffā€™s Notes of the first half of the book and listened to the second half.Ā

For a long time I thought perhaps the family secrets had something to do with
Nazis. Because of Nickā€™s comment in the Cave about the Gestapo, the mysterious origins of Sophie and the concierge. etc.
Iā€™m not sure if that was intentional or just me?

The audiobook narration seems to be where I differ from most reviewers. I found this book corny at times, and the acting was EXTRA corny. I rolled my eyes at Sophieā€™s going on and on about how thin and put together she is, but listening to Mimi speak was 10x worse. I donā€™t see why one actor canā€™t do all the characters: in fact, the actors DO play multiple characters. When Nick speaks in Jessā€™s chapters, Jessā€™s actor voices his quotes, not his actor. That couldā€™ve been done through the whole thing. It just felt really cheesy in an already kind of cheesy book. [I had the same problem with the audiobook for the Hunting Party.]

The audiobook recording includes a podcast interview of the author at the end, and honestly, hearing some analysis of the book improved my opinion of it somewhat. I donā€™t think there are any spoilers in it? So I might recommend folks listen to that before they listen to the book itself perhaps?Ā

NOTHING in this book was the bisexual representation we wanted.
Three members of the same family fucking or trying to fuck the same guy wasā€¦ Yeah, corny, like I said. And then Nick, whoā€™s already fooled around with Ben, also almost sleeps with Benā€™s sister? But oops heā€™s actually completely gay and itā€™s only because she reminds him of her brother. Eye roll. And yes I knew way before the ā€œrevealā€ that Mimiā€™s roommate was f**king Antoineā€™s wife. Nice try.

Intriguing mystery, with lots of twists I didnā€™t see coming. Slow in parts but I enjoyed all the perspectives. I liked how the rest of them were all entwined/related and Jess and Ben were outsiders, but Ben had made such an impact on the rest of them. I liked how there were mysteries about each of them that, once discovered, added to the main plot/mystery.Ā

Enjoyed isn't quite the right word for this book, but it kept my attention and I think overall made a good thriller. It also surprised me a few times.Ā

Slow at times, however I really enjoyed the end of the books. A couple of the characters had developed into stronger characters by the end, but it was hard to say they were overall ā€œloveableā€.Ā

I only knocked off some points when rating this only bc some things about what unfolded in this book made me feel a little icky šŸ˜…

Overall it was very well done, the weaving of each character's telling of the story from their pov was very well timed and laid out perfectly. Lots of twists. I added the content warnings but most of them aren't explicitly described, just mentioned or alluded to. This book wasn't graphic, save for a couple dark moments necessary to the plot. But I was hooked from the beginning! And the main character was very smart about what to do so it made the book that much more exciting.
