Such a great mystery book, but definitely dark and a little gritty. It starts so quickly and does not doesnt dance around starting. You are plunged into the plot immediately and swept into a multitude of characters.

I didn’t like this book as much as the other Lucy Foley book I read. It felt so long with nothing happening for most of the book. At the beginning, the general vibe was eerie and suspicious, but as truths came to light for some reason the tone and atmosphere was less and less sinister. I guessed the culprit(s) early on, though didn’t know how everything fit together. The author did a good job at fitting lots of details together that seemed unrelated. I was unsurprised by the big reveals of the whodunit and while the twist at the end was unexpected, it wasn’t satisfying- it was more like, “oh, okay, that makes more sense I guess.” I haven’t read a lot of mysteries or thrillers, but this one felt predictable, especially as the pieces of the puzzle began sliding together. The dual timelines and memories in the narratives were a bit confusing too, especially the closer we got to the crime and the memories and present day were only a couple of days apart. Overall, an alright book, but nothing stood out to me.

It’s honestly a great story, but it has an extremely slow beginning in my opinion. It took at least ten chapters for me to stop falling asleep in the midst of reading.

Hmm I feel like this is more in between a 3.75 and a 4.

The way I realized the author writes mysteries is with light cliffhangers. The chapters are short and alternate points of view. Each chapter ends with a bit of a longing for wanting more but it’s not so much that you’ll get nightmares or stay up all night thinking about it if you don’t read the whole book in one sitting.

To some extent, I enjoyed that for the health of my sleeping habits. But on the other hand, I think the best mysteries on the ones I couldn’t put down.

The big twist that they were a family really got me that had a lot of shock factor. But after that the subsequent twists I semi expected. For instance the connection between the housekeeper character and the granddaughter seemed the most obvious. The wine cellars being used as a way to pay for women was not surprising. The fact that Ben was still alive was kind of shocking although I did suspect the dad was in fact killed but that Ben probably also was killed.

Ohmygod so good. Like the best read of the year so far. Multiple point of views, each complicated and confusing

despite it being medium-paced overall, I found it hard to binge read it because the perspective kept jumping between 6 people. I liked the twist at the end, I didn't see that coming, but then there were 20 pages of it being spoon-fed to me which just felt redundant and took away from the shock factor of said twist. It would've easily been a 3.5 or even a 4 star book if it was 20 pages shorter imo

Wow unlike other people I didn't hate this book. I thought it was pretty good for a mystery/thriller story. This book follows Jess and her adventure to find her brother, when she can't find him in his mysterious Paris apartment complex. The narrators really brought to live the different POVs for every chapter, jt was fun hearing how expressive their voices could be and how easily the story then flowed. It was an easy to follow plot line, but I was surprised it only took place within the span of a few days? It felt like at least a month when reading this book, ngl. Jess was an easy character to root for, an underdog if you will. She had a rough childhood, Ben is her only brother/family, she wants to find him and will do anything to do so. The plot twist at the end is one I didn't expect, it seemed a little anticlimactic- which is why I docked it .25 stars.
Another thing that was anticlimactic was when they found Ben alive in the attic? Like I honestly think the story would have been better with him dead and decomposing up there but whatever.
Overall this book was an easy read and I don't get how people hated it so much. It's easy plot and easy to get into.

I loved this book. It's a thriller full of twists and turns. You think you've sussed out what's going on and then a snippet of detail makes you question everything you thought you knew.

And that ending! Wow, that was a plot twist and a half!
